South Melbourne and Bay City claim 2017 Championships

Congratulations to our two 2017 Champions – South Melbourne Fistball Club (Men’s Division) and Bay City Fisters (Mixed Division)!

Both teams came from behind in thrilling circumstances to pip their respective leaders by just 1 win (4 points) at the final hurdle – an appropriately exciting conclusion to the 2017 season, and in line with the tight finishes of previous seasons.

Condolences to Fist Club (Men’s Division) and FistStorm (Mixed Division); both incredibly strong teams that had led for much of the season, but couldn’t hold off the final wave.

The Best & Fistest winners on the day were 4-time B&F winner Carl “Carlossus” Creasey (Bay City Fisters) in the Men’s Division and first time winner Alex “Rage” Sinclair (FistStorm) in the Mixed Division.

A full write-up on the thrilling conclusion will come shortly.

And so ends the 2017 VFL Season.

Thank you to the 8 clubs for your mostly regular attendance this season (saving us from unnecessary administration), and a special thank you to the 66 members who signed up this year (up from 49 last year), and the 96 individual players who threw a fist at some point this season (including many first-timers). Thank you as well to everyone who helped set up a court on the day, paid their fees on time, filled out forms and voting slips in a timely fashion, and generally helped this season to run relatively smoothly. You are our favourite people.

As for fistball in the near future – our IFA Fistball World Tour event (the 2017 Australian National Championships) will be held on Saturday the 28th of October, returning fisters to the East Belmont Saints Baseball Club for another round, albeit in a vastly different tournament. Details to be released very soon.

In addition, the Australian national fistball teams will be named soon after the final selection training next Sunday, with the Trans-Tasman Fistball Championships to unfold in Christchurch over January 26-28 next year, with the Aussies hoping to defend the 2017 Men’s title, and claim the Women’s title for the first time from the New Zealand Fistball Association.

The 2017 Klemens Kronsteiner Medal Night will be held at Flemington & Kensington Bowling Club on Saturday, February 17th, so lock that date in for our biggest awards night yet! The 2018 VFL Season will likely kick off on March 3rd, with full season dates to be released later this year.

In the more distant future, we will be putting together a women’s national fistball team early in the new year to once again take on the world’s best at the Women’s World Championships, this time in Austria in July 2018. As always, we are on the look out for more potential female fistballers, so please send them our way if you know any. Of course, we will be hosting the Asia-Pacific Fistball Championships in November 2018 (kind of a big deal), and looking forward to the Men’s World Fistball Championships in Switzerland, August 2019.

Fist on!
